Rémi Ochlik

Remi Ochlik was born in eastern France in 1983.

After graduating from high school, he went to Paris to study photography at Icart Photo school. He also started working for Wostok, a photography agency.

In 2004, at the age of 20, he went to Haiti to photograph riots surrounding the fall of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. It was Remi’s first conflict experience. The resulting work was awarded by the François Chalais Award for Young Reporters and was projected at Visa pour l’Image International Photojournalism Festival.

In 2005, he founded IP3 PRESS with the goal of covering news in Paris and conflicts around the world. He covered the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2008, the cholera epidemic and presidential elections in Haiti in 2010.

In 2011, Remi photographed the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions and the uprising and war in Libya. He received the Grand Prix Jean Louis Calderon and first prize stories in the 2012 World Press Photo contest for his work Battle for Libya.

He was killed when a shell hit the building where he and other journalists were working in Homs, Syria, on 22 February 2012.

Remi Ochlik est né dans l'est de la France en 1983 et est mort à Homs, en Syrie, le 22 février 2012.          

Après avoir été diplômé de l'école secondaire, il se rend à Paris pour étudier la photographie à l'école Icart Photo. Il a également commencé à travailler pour Wostok, une agence de photographie.

En 2004, à l'âge de 20 ans, il part en Haïti pour photographier des émeutes entourant la chute du président Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Ce fut sa première expérience des conflits. Le travail qui en a résulté a été récompensé par le Prix François Chalais pour les jeunes reporters et a été projeté au Festival international de photojournalisme, Visa pour l'Image.

En 2005, il fonde l'agence de photographie IP3 PRESS, avec l'objectif de couvrir l’actualité à Paris et les conflits dans le monde. Il a couvert la guerre en République démocratique du Congo en 2008, l'épidémie de choléra et les élections présidentielles en Haïti en 2010.

En 2011, Rémi a photographié les révolutions tunisienne, égyptienne, l’insurrection et la guerre en Libye. Il a reçu le Grand Prix Jean Louis Calderon et 1rst Prize stories General News au World Press Photo 2012 pour son travail sur la Libye.

Il a été tué quand un obus a frappé le bâtiment où lui et d'autres journalistes travaillaient à Homs, en Syrie, le 22 février 2012
